Munich Hacking Legal – Event Recap

The first edition of the Munich Hacking Legal was organized by @START Munich in collaboration with the @Liquid Legal Institute e.V., and the @Legal Tech Colab. The event also had the Stanford CODEX as Cooperation Partner and happened on the weekend of 26–27 April 2025 at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), with invaluable support from TUM Venture Labs Built Environment, who provided the space for this extraordinary weekend of creativity.

Held in the dynamic innovation ecosystem of Munich, the event brought together a diverse and passionate group of legal and tech minds to think about the challenges of legal innovation.

75 Talents, 24 Hours, 1 Goal: Innovation

From a pool of over 200 highly qualified applicants, 75 participants were selected to take part in the 24-hour hackathon. Divided into 23 interdisciplinary teams, they were challenged to develop innovative ideas and working prototypes under time pressure, but in a very creative environment.

The participants worked on three real-world challenges, brought in by our sponsoring partners BMW Group, Legora, and ELTEMATE, covering topics at the intersection of law, technology, and business.

The atmosphere throughout the weekend was both celebratory and focused—as participants coded, designed, and pitched their way through an unforgettable experience. The results were outstanding and showcased the depth of potential in the legal tech space.

A Winning Story of Diversity and Collaboration

Among the standout moments of the event was the compelling journey of the winning team, composed of three women — Katharina Köhler, Sıla A., and Gaia Nardella — each from a different country, meeting for the very first time on the morning of the hackathon. Leveraging their interdisciplinary expertise (two with legal backgrounds, one with a computer science background), they developed a solution that won the competition.

Their reward: an invitation to participate in the LLMxLAW Hackathon at King’s College, Cambridge in June 2025 — an international stage to further develop and showcase their innovation, besides a prize in money.

The event was further enriched by the presence of Georg Eisenreich, Bavarian State Minister of Justice, who dedicated three hours of his Sunday to support the teams, witness their progress, and celebrate their achievements.

Jury & Community Support

Our sincere appreciation also goes to our jury members: Judith Fauth, Robert Dilworth, Dr. Peter Ruttmann, Melanie Pospisil, Jonathan Melke, and Benjamin Harrison, for lending their time, insight, and thoughtful evaluation during the pitch session.

We are deeply grateful to all our supporters. In addition to our Challenge Sponsors, we would like to thank our Strategic SponsorsRödl & Partner, LDA Legal Data Analytics GmbH, Siemens, and the Bundesnotarkammer.
